QUARTERLY NURSING HOME REPORT FOR OHIO
The Ohio Department of Health's Division of Quality Assurance has released the Quarterly Nursing Home Report (Issue 3, January 2012). The report provides information on selected indicators of care and services being provided to nursing home residents in the state of Ohio. Within the report, three main determinants of quality of care ( weight loss/nutrition, dehydration, and pressure ulcers) were chosen for review and analysis. Click here to learn more.

THE ADA ANNOUNCES A NAME CHANGE
The American Dietetic Association, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, will change its name effective January 2012 to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

THE DMA ANNOUNCES A NAME CHANGE
Beginning January 1, 2012, the Dietary Managers Association
will launch a new logo and begin officially referring to the organization, in all communications, as the Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals (ANFP).
NEW FOOD LABELING IN THE WORKS
The FDA recently announced its desire to revamp the Nutrition Facts label. The proposal targets changes to several parts of the label
including more accurate serving sizes, a greater emphasis on calories and a diminished role in the daily percent values for substances like fat, sodium and carbohydrates. Click here to learn more.

RECENT TURKEY RECALL SPARKS CALL FOR CHANGE
The CDC reports that there has been one death and 76 confirmed illnesses linked to ground turkey contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella. Unfortunately, it took the government agencies 13 days to ask a major meat processor to recall the contaminated ground turkey. Why so long? CMS recently published revised definitions and interpretations related to therapuetic diets, mechanically altered diets and nutritional supplements for coding purposes on the MDS 3.0. This was in response to recommendations proposed by the American Dietetic Association. Click here to learn more.
USDA REVISES GUIDELINE FOR COOKING TEMPERATURES FOR ALL OF WHOLE CUT MEATS
The revised cooking temperature for all whole cut meats, including pork is 145°F. The recommended cooking temperature for ground pork, beef, veal and lamb is 160 °F. Click here to learn more.
BID FAREWELL TO THE FOOD PYRAMID
On June 2, 2011 the USDA announced the replacement of the Food Pyramid with a new pictorial using a "plate" as the basis to guide Americans for healthy meal planning. Click here to learn more.

POLST: END-OF-LIFE CARE WISHES
There are new efforts to simplify end-of-life care wishes. A growing number of states are promoting a program to help guide physicians with a patient's specific instructions called POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treament).

DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS, 2010
On January 31, 2011, The USDA and HHS released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010. The guidelines have been released to help Americans make healthier food choices and to confront the obesity epidemic. Read the press release
OSTEOPOROSIS UPDATE
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) now recommends screening for osteoporosis in women ages 65 years and older and in younger women whose fracture risk is equal to or greater than that of a 65-year-old white woman who has no additional risk factors.

THE FOOD SAFETY MODERNIZATION ACT
The Food Safety Modernization Act was signed into law
