We can all agree on one thing – we are living in unpredictable and unprecedented times. It’s a wild ride, to say the least.

Some of us have lost loved ones, some of us have had the virus and survived, some of us have had trouble paying the bills, and all of us have been impacted by this sometimes scary and uncertain time in our world. Many of us will feel anxious and fearful. For some – it’s a new feeling. Many of us are feeling significant anxiety for the first time.

First and foremost, whatever you are feeling at this time is OK. We are all allowed to have whatever feeling we have during “coronavirus times.” Anxiety is a normal, natural response to unprecedented times, threats of illness, stress, and restricted life.

There is so much we can’t control. We invite you to focus on what you can. Here are 3 ways to cope with anxiety:

  1. Sit with how you are feeling. Be kind and gentle with yourself. When waves of coronavirus anxiety show up, notice, and describe the experience to yourself or others without judgment. Generally, if you allow the emotion to be present for 90 seconds, it will pass. Remember, they are called feelings because we are supposed to feel them. The more you resist what you are feeling, the more it will persist in your day.

  2.  Be informed, and keep things in perspective. Limit worry and agitation by lessening the time you spend watching or listening to upsetting media coverage. Although you’ll want to keep informed — especially if you have loved ones in affected countries — remember to take a break from watching the news and focus on the things that are positive in your life and things you have control over

  3. Breathe – Box breathing is a technique used to take slow, deep breaths. It can be done several times throughout the day and helps calm nerves and relieve stress.

First, empty your lungs of air.

☁ Slowly inhale for 4 counts

☁ Hold the breath for a count of 3 ⁠⁠

☁ Slowly exhale for 4 counts

☁ Hold the breath for a count of 3

☁ Repeat the cycle up to 4 times⁠
